“AI, the nexus of human brilliance and technological marvels, reshapes our world with profound impact. Let us navigate this boundless frontier, hand in hand with our creations, and together, orchestrate a future that echoes with collective intelligence.” ChatGPT generated this thought-provoking response when asked for a quote that highlights the power and future of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
In the past year, AI and machine learning have emerged and quickly become the new norm, integrated into almost all aspects of our visible and invisible life. From AI-generated images to AI Chatbots, it is phenomenal technology that is still evolving! While AI offers unparalleled support and addresses human limitations, it is important to question what happens when humans overly rely on AI as a one-size-fits-all solution without ensuring its accuracy. After all, it's AI— it must be right, right?
Recent events have shed light on the potential downfalls of complete dependence on AI, or at least what individuals believe AI to be! Recently, Forbes published an article about a lawyer who cited at least six other cases as precedents in his lawsuit. The article stated that a federal judge was forced to consider sanctions due to the fact that the cases didn't exist and had "bogus judicial decisions”. It was revealed that the lawyer used ChatGPT to conduct legal research for the court filing and was assured that the cases brought up by the Chatbot were real! AI chatbots undoubtedly have their merits but they also possess limitations and risks which is why further education is needed for individuals to truly understand how it works and what scenarios it can be used in.
This story is not the first time AI language models have "hallucinated" information, a term used by the tech industry to refer to inaccuracies presented by AI. An article published in The New York Times, shows how AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing Chat have presented false and misleading information. The authors conducted experiments with all three chatbots and found that they all provided incorrect answers. Chatbots are driven by a technology called a large language model, which learns by analyzing vast amounts of digital text from the internet. These models identify patterns and generate word sequences, similar to a complex version of an autocomplete tool. However, as seen in the lawyer mishap AI chatbots can curate incomplete and inaccurate content.
These cases vividly demonstrate the detrimental effects of complete dependence on machine learning and artificial intelligence tools, which could lead to irreparable harm to organizations. This is precisely why at Vijilent we take a different approach. We understand the unpredictability and tendency of chatbots to generate inaccurate information, which is why we don't solely rely on machine learning data and refrain from using chatbots. Vijilent utilizes machine learning similar to IBM Watson's sentiment analysis combined with human intelligence to create juror profiles that are more accurate than that of our competitors! After all, how will AI know which Tom Smith from Denver, CO is the right Tom Smith when there are thousands to choose from? When it comes to the voir dire process, it's crucial to maintain accuracy in the data we research and process to generate honest, accurate, and bias-free data portraits. This is especially important because the stakes are remarkably high in jury selection!
